Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s yearbook has continued its tradition of winning a national Pacemaker award.
The Talisman won the award Saturday at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Kansas City. The Pacemaker awards, co-sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, are considered to be the Pulitzer Prize of college journalism.
The Talisman has won 11 national Pacemakers, including four awards since resuming publication in 2003.
Heather Mitchell, a May 2007 graduate from Versailles, was editor of the 2007 Talisman. Talisman advisers were Bob Adams and Jackie Bretz. Fran Gardler was the photo adviser.
In the 2008 ACP Photo Excellence Awards Talisman staffers took home one first place, one second and one honorable mention. The award is co-sponsored by National Press Photographers Association.
Matt Fields-Johnson, a senior from Bumpass, Va., received a first place in environmental portrait, while Nashville senior Sergei Bogatcheva received an honorable mention in the same category. Tyler Orsburn, a former student from Corydon, placed second in sports picture.
The Herald was one of 19 Pacemaker finalists in the four-year non-daily newspaper category. The Herald has won the national Pacemaker 11 times.
Kat Wilson, a December 2007 graduate from Knoxville, Tenn., received an honorable mention for Newspaper Page One design in the 2008 ACP Design of the Year contest co-sponsored by Adobe Systems.
