WKU Forensic Team Competes In Illinois, California Events

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University forensic team members traveled to Peoria, Ill., and Stockton, Calif., to take part in two tournaments the weekend of Nov. 8-10.

This year’s tournament at Bradley University was the largest ever, with 46 schools competing. WKU was crowned sweepstakes champions with 216 points. George Mason University placed second with 155 points, and Ohio University placed third with 73 points. WKU also took the top two awards in Pentathlon, which is reserved for students who compete in five or more events across all three genres of competition, with Joele Denis in first place was Joele Denis and Lauren Nelson in second.

At the University of the Pacific tournament, WKU’s debate team closed out the finals of Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Results from the L.E. Norton Bradley Invitational are as follows:

Joele Denis, a senior from Hollywood, Fla., tournament champion in dramatic interpretation, third in programmed oral interpretation, fourth in communication analysis and quarterfinalist in prose interpretation.
Maggie Woodward, a freshman from Collierville, Tenn., tournament champion in novice informative speaking, tournament champion in novice persuasive speaking and fourth in novice communication analysis.
Lauren Nelson, a senior from Wheaton, Ill., second in communication analysis, fifth in extemporaneous speaking, sixth in impromptu speaking and semifinalist in poetry interpretation.
Ganer Newman, a senior from Sherman Oaks, Calif., tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Ethan Millspaugh), fourth in duo interpretation (with Carrie Guggenmos), fifth in dramatic interpretation and quarterfinalist in prose interpretation.
Jessica Furgerson, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, tournament champion in impromptu speaking.
Ethan Millspaugh, a sophomore from Coppell, Texas, tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Ganer Newman).
Taron Grizzell, a freshman from Union City, Calif., tournament champion in novice duo interpretation (with Celena Allen) and sixth in novice after-dinner speaking.
Celena Allen, a freshman from Hayward, Calif., tournament champion in novice duo interpretation (with Taron Grizzell) and semifinalist in novice prose interpretation.
Matt Whitman, a freshman from Austin, Texas, tournament champion in novice extemporaneous speaking and semifinalist in novice impromptu speaking.
Seth Peckham, a junior from Alden, Kan., second in extemporaneous speaking, second in informative speaking, semifinalist in communication analysis and semifinalist in impromptu speaking.
Rachel Wigginton, a senior from Glendale, second in duo interpretation (with J.D. VanSlyke), third in after-dinner speaking and quarterfinalist in prose interpretation.
Khristan Solliday, a freshman from Mitchell, Ind., second in novice communication analysis, third in novice impromptu speaking and sixth in novice extemporaneous speaking.
J.D. VanSlyke, a senior from Wylie, Texas, second in duo interpretation (with Rachel Wigginton) and third in informative speaking.
Adam Swanson, a junior from Rosemount, Minn., third in prose interpretation, semi-finalist in dramatic interpretation and semifinalist in after-dinner speaking.
Carrie Guggenmos, a junior from Fullerton, Calif., fourth in duo interpretation (with Ganer Newman), sixth in dramatic interpretation, semifinalist in informative speaking and semifinalist in persuasive speaking.
Jerome Davis, a junior from Austell, Ga., third in dramatic interpretation and quarterfinalist in prose interpretation.
Ashley Litsey, a senior from Hodgenville, third in duo interpretation (with Cornelius Lee).
Cornelius Lee, a senior from Killeen, Texas, third in duo interpretation (with Ashley Litsey).

Todd Rainey, a sophomore from Indianapolis, semifinalist in extemporaneous speaking and semifinalist in impromptu speaking.
Jeffrey Boggess, a junior from Hayward, Calif., semifinalist in dramatic interpretation.
Desiree Guerrero, a sophomore from Fullerton, Calif., semifinalist in informative speaking.
Chelsea Harman, a sophomore from Hickory, semifinalist in poetry interpretation.
