Warren County Sights And Sounds Exhibit Opens May 31 At WKU

Bowling Green, Ky. - Warren County Sights and Sounds, an exhibit presenting the history and culture of Bowling Green and Warren County in photographs and film, will open May 31 in Western Kentucky University’s Kentucky Library & Museum.

The exhibit is the result of a two-year joint project where approximately 150 photographs and 45 feet of moving film related to Bowling Green and Warren County were collected. Sponsors of the project and exhibit are The Landmark Association, The Bowling Green/Warren County Historic Preservation Board, Insight Communications, and The Kentucky Library & Museum. 

“Warren County Sights and Sounds is the culmination of a collaborative effort between a number of local historical entities,” said Jonathan Jeffrey, Manuscripts and Folklife Archives Coordinator at WKU’s Kentucky Library & Museum. “We are pleased to have these images permanently included in the Kentucky Library & Museum collection and doubly pleased to present them to the community in this intriguing exhibit.”

The exhibit’s cultural images feature the people and places in Bowling Green and Warren County, including parades around Fountain Square Park, sports groups, horse-drawn sleighs, and individual portraits. Several photographs portray river scenes, such as a rare one showing people swimming in the Barren River at the foot of State Street.  Images of Beech Bend Park and various historical properties are included.

The exhibit also focuses on the history of the city and county. A significant grouping of photographs relate to a 1960 campaign stop in the city by presidential candidate John F. Kennedy. Perhaps the most unusual photograph is of Lewis and Damsel Underwood, slaves of Warner Lewis Underwood, a prominent 19th century lawyer and politician from Bowling Green. 

Sights and Sounds of Warren County will be located in the Museum’s Garden Gallery and continues through
Dec. 7.
