WKU Police Chief Selected For National Leadership Training
May 09, 2008
Bowling
Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University Police Chief Robert Deane is one of 24 law enforcement executives from across the country to participate in a National Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on violence against women.
The Institute, sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, will be held May 18-21 in San Francisco. The goal is to provide training for officers to better respond to crimes of violence against women and to raise awareness of those issues on law enforcement’s agenda across the nation. Chief Deane supports the adoption of those best practices by the officers in the WKU Police Department.
“Like many college campuses, WKU is essentially a small city,” Deane said. “We in the WKU Police need to be able to adequately respond to all types of situations, including those that involve violence against women. I am honored to be one of the few selected for this training and believe I will be able to bring valuable information back to our department.”
WKU President Gary Ransdell said Chief Deane’s selection was an indication of the professionalism of the WKU Police Department.
“Our officers are more than security guards,” he said. “They are sworn, professional police officers who face many of the same situations as municipal officers, but in a more intimate, college setting. I am pleased that Chief Deane will receive this training and expect it will further equip our department to respond to the needs of our campus community.”
During the three-day institute participants will explore innovative approaches for investigating crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. Additional attention will center on assessing agency performance and sharing challenges and solutions with law enforcement colleagues.
In an effort to help law enforcement agencies enhance their response to crimes of violence against women, the Institute will focus on planning and methods for effective resource allocation to help crime victims and hold perpetrators accountable. Participants will be engaged in the development of action plans throughout the Institute in order to adopt new strategies for proactive coordinated community collaboration upon returning to their departments.
All expenses for participants are covered under a grant to the IACP from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.
The IACP is the world’s oldest and largest non-profit membership organization of police executives, with more than 21,000 members in 100 countries. IACP’s membership consists of the operating chief executives of international, federal, tribal, state, campus and local agencies of all sizes.
