May 27, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Brooke Shafar, a May 2008 Western Kentucky University graduate from Louisville, has been selected for a 2008-09 J. William Fulbright Scholarship to Germany.

Shafar will teach English as a second language and conduct research on German cinema. As a result of spending a year in Germany, she will defer a full fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis until the 2009-10 academic year.

“Brooke is one more example of the high quality of WKU students,” said Dr. Craig T. Cobane, director of the Honors College. “WKU students are consistently earning some of the country’s most competitive scholarships and attending top graduate and professional schools.”

Shafar, a member of WKU’s Honors College, graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average, had a double major in German and English and was named a scholar of WKU’s Potter College of Arts & Letters.

She is the daughter of Fred and DeDe Shafar and Tammy and Brent McCarty.
