Facet Summer Conference To Focus On How WKU Faculty Can Improve Student Success

May 28, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - On June 4, Western Kentucky University’s Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching (FaCET) will hold its 2008 Summer Conference on the theme of “Engaging Ideas to Improve Student Success.”  This theme has special relevance with about 40 percent of students coming to college each year lacking at least one basic academic skill and content that they need to be successful in college.

The conference will be held in the Academic Advising and Retention Center (AARC) in Downing University Center Annex, beginning with lunch and remarks by AARC Director Ellen Bonaguro at 12:15 p.m.  Two tracks of sessions will follow at 1:10-4 p.m., featuring topics such as “Engaging nontraditional students in the classroom,”  “Strategies for student retention in an online environment,” “Advising strategies that help students be proactive in their academic careers,” and others.

What can faculty do to help students acquire basic skills or overcome content gaps to succeed at WKU? How can faculty engage students in learning?  How can they help students build motivation for success, believe in their potential for success in college, and develop an image of success to go along with new skills?  These are important questions for WKU to support success in the classroom.  This conference will give faculty and staff the opportunity to share ideas and strategies for increasing student persistence and retention, while also maintaining high instructional standards.

The conference is open to all faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants at no charge.  Two of the sessions are approved for Basic Skills for College Teaching (BSCT) credit.  Those interested in registering may contact FaCET at facet@wku.edu or 745-6508.  Participants who plan to attend the lunch must register by June 2.
