WKU's 7th Annual Gift Of Music Recital Set For April 12

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Department of Music at Western Kentucky University will host its seventh annual Gift of Music Recital on April 12.music

The recital, featuring 2007-08 scholarship recipients in solo and chamber works, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Admission is free. 

“It is a time of personal appreciation when these students perform for their scholarship donors and friends,” said Dr. Mitzi Groom, head of the Music Department. “These scholarships have succeeded in helping the Department of Music attract talented musicians to our program as well as establishing a very high standard for musical excellence among the 170 music majors who attend WKU.”

Performers on this year’s recital are:  Aaron West of Utica, violin; Amberly Bush of Bowling Green, double bass; Natalie Riley of Bowling Green, harp; Will Armour of Bowling Green, voice; Bronson Murphy of Bowling Green, voice; Catherine Larson of Bowling Green, viola; Cody Gilstrap of Bowling Green, horn; Susan Abell of Bowling Green, cello; Laura Beth Galipeau of Russellville, piano; Parker Scinta of Louisville, guitar; Kelly Lafferty of Shelbyville, violin; Tony Richardson of Shelbyville, voice; Steven Lopez of Franklin, saxophone; Chris Osborne of Springfield, Tenn., percussion; Melissa Gensler of Rockfield, flute; Rachel Stewart of Central City, clarinet; Erin Goad of Brownsboro, Ala., oboe; Phoebe Simpson of Lexington, viola; Ashley Grueter of Ashland City, Tenn., cello; Megan Wheat of Scottsville, oboe; and Lindsay Harned of Lebanon Junction, piano.

These students are the recipients of funds from various scholarships: Jerry Baker, Blanch and Austin Duckett, Music Department Faculty, Walter F. Harter, Marita Hawley Travelstead, Nelle Gooch Travelstead, Dr. Samuel W. and Jeane Payne Tinsley, Athena Cage, Edward J. Pease, Bennie Beach, Jr., Ohm Pauli, Seymour Spiegelman, D. & S. Vitale, Mitzi Groom and Howard Carpenter. 

This special concert brings much anticipation to our faculty and students during its planning stages and great satisfaction to all when the communication on the concert evening between the donors and the recipients is either initiated or rekindled.  The WKU Department of Music faculty members take pride in this recital through their participation in the planning (Don Speer, coordinator), studio teaching/mentoring and attendance.

Following the concert, a reception will be hosted in the Fine Arts Center Art Gallery by David Lee, dean of WKU’s Potter College of Arts and Letters.
