WKU Student Newspaper Staff Members Honored

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association has named Western Kentucky University advertising major Savannah Bowles the Staffer of the Year.

Bowles, a senior from Mt. Hermon, accumulated the most points in the annual KIPA newspaper contest. Bowles is creative director for the College Heights Herald, WKU’s twice-weekly student newspaper, Awards were presented at the convention in Lexington.  

Bowles won the advertising design and advertising campaign categories, placed second in advertising copy and house ads and third in advertising campaigns.

In other advertising categories, Lexington senior Alaina Matthews won advertising art and finished second in advertising campaign. Tompkinsville junior Savannah Thomas placed first in advertising copy and house ads. Burkesville senior Jenni Dickens was second in advertising art and third in advertising copy.

“It’s wonderful to have the students recognized for all of their hard work with the Herald,” said JoAnn Thompson, Herald advertising adviser. “The experience they gain in working on the Herald will give them an edge when they enter the job market.”

In on-site competition, Shelbyville senior Samantha Hupman won the deadline editing contest and Nina Bosken, a junior from Cincinnati, placed second in the deadline writing competition. Hupman is the Herald’s copy desk chief and Bosken is features editor.

Other winners in the competition were Berea senior Katie Brandenburg, investigative reporting; Jan Diehm, a junior from Springfield, Tenn., best special section design; and Nathan Morgan, a December graduate from Madison, Tenn., news photo.

Second-place finishers were Layne Stackhouse, a May graduate from Nashville, investigative reporting; Louisville senior David Harten, commentary; Bowling Green junior Corey Paul, analyses and special reports; the Herald staff, continuing news; Cody Duty, a sophomore from Decatur, Texas, sports photo.

Placing third were Shepherdsville junior Susie Laun, analyses and special reports; Paul, investigative reporting; Harten, sports column; Wes Nolen, a December graduate from Erin, Tenn., original illustration; Bryan Anslem, news photo; Courtney Hergesheimer, a junior from Dana Point, Calif., feature photo.

Honorable mention recipients were Brandenburg, news story; Paul, Bosken, Michael Hall, a graduate student from Jacksonville, Fla., and the Herald staff; analyses and special reports; Bowling Green freshman Annie Erskine, editorial cartoon; and Daniel Houghton, a sophomore from Fayetteville, Ga., feature photo.

Herald adviser Bob Adams said he was proud that the Staffer of the Year was from WKU as well as the winner of the on-site editing competition and runner-up in the deadline writing. “Those are extremely competitive,” he said.
 
Ten staff members and Adams represented WKU at the convention last weekend.
