Champion Speech Coach To Be Honored At WKU Tournament

March 19, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Beth Randolph and Debbie Dean, who have jointly coached The School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) of Lexington to 10 straight state championships, will be honored at the start of the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) Junior State Tournament this weekend.

The SCAPA coaches will be inducted into the KHSSL Hall of Fame at the opening assembly Friday at 2 p.m. (CDT) at Western Kentucky University’s Van Meter Auditorium.

More than 30 schools will be competing in 11 categories during the two-day event around the WKU campus. KHSSL Executive Director Jim Turner says 305 fourth- through eighth-graders have qualified for state in 444 events.

The final awards program will be held at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Van Meter Auditorium.

The Kentucky High School Speech League, Inc. encourages all students to participate in academic competition, receiving an understanding of and appreciation for worthwhile speech, drama, and debate. KHSSL enhances and refines students' skills in acting, speaking, listening, and critical thinking, and provides an arena for extracurricular competition in speech, drama, and debate.

John Williamson, superintendent of Highlands High School at Fort Thomas, is chairman of the KHSSL Board of Directors.

KHSSL is coordinated by the Communication Department of WKU, led by Dr. Sally Ray.
