Bowling
Green, Ky. - High school clarinet and saxophonists finishing ninth, 10th and 11th grades this year are invited to come to Western Kentucky University and be a Hilltopper for fun and challenging two-day summer music workshops.
The workshops are a great opportunity for students who are considering majoring in music in college or who simply love to play their instrument and want to get a jumpstart on summer practice.
The Topper Clarinet Weekend is June 5-7, and the Topper Saxophone Weekend is June 12-14. Both camps will be held at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center on WKU’s campus. The cost of the camps includes housing, meals and a pass to the Preston Health and Activities Center.
Both camps will culminate in a concert for campers’ family and friends.
Camp Director Dr. John Cipolla is assistant professor of music at WKU and has worked in New York City as a clarinetist and saxophonist for more than 20 years. He has performed with an eclectic array of artists and ensembles and is an engaging teacher and performer. Dr. Cipolla has been recognized as the 2007 Kentucky Music Educators College/University Teacher of the Year. He was a member of the New York City Broadway Show Cats Orchestra from 1992 to 2000 and has been a member of the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra in New York City since 1985.
Topics covered during the two camps will include breathing, tone development, articulation, reed adjustment, music theory basics, sight-reading, blending and tuning in an ensemble, audition tips and improvisation.
The early registration deadline is April 18 with a fee of $175. After April 18 the registration fee is $195. Late applications will be accepted on the basis of available space.
