Bowling
Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s 2008 Winter Term ended Friday and with enrollment topping the mark set in the first two years of the program, it’s being called a resounding success.
Winter Term courses are short, but very intensive, for students who want to squeeze in an extra class during the winter break.
Approximately 2,239 students took a Winter Term course, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2007. WKU’s Winter Term has grown to become one of the largest in the nation.
While ideal for juniors and seniors who are anxious to graduate, more underclassmen are realizing the benefits of taking a Winter Term course.
“This means we haven’t met the student demand yet,” said Beth Laves, Winter Term director. “The demand is greater than what we have to offer, but we continue to build upon the number of courses that are available.”
WKU Winter Term courses were held on the Bowling Green campus as well as the regional campuses in Glasgow, Elizabethtown/Fort Knox and Owensboro and online.
During Winter Term, 132 students chose to study abroad, traveling to places such as the Bahamas, Germany, England, Mexico, Malaysia, Costa Rica and India, while earning college credit for their experiences.
Students make faster progress toward graduation by taking classes during Winter Term. The Winter Term also gives students additional opportunities to take classes that are difficult to get into or prerequisites they need for other courses.
“We didn’t expect to grow nearly 20 percent again this year, but it shows that students understand the value in taking classes besides those in the traditional fall and spring semesters,” Laves said.
