Green, Ky. - Areté, which is Greek for excellence, lived up to its name as the student-produced newsletter for the Western Kentucky University Honors College earned a national honor.
The newsletter finished first in the student-produced newsletter contest, sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council. The award was presented in November at the NCHC conference. Co-editor Sam Micallef, a Lexington junior, also spoke on a panel titled “How to produce and award-winning newsletter.”
“We are especially pleased with this recognition because we entered the competition after only our first full year of publication,” said faculty adviser Angela Jones.
The first edition of Areté appeared in the spring of 2006 and was co-edited by Ria Wallace, a Shepherdsville senior, and Kat Wilson, a senior from Farragut, Tenn. Micallef and Wilson are co-editors for 2007-08.
“During the 2006-2007 academic year, we increased our publication goals, creating two substantial issues each semester and a brief graduation issue at the conclusion of the year,” Dr. Jones said. The students began producing the newsletter monthly beginning with the fall 2007 semester.
The Honors College prints 200 copies of the newsletter and posts them online at http://www.wku.edu/Dept/Special/Honors/arete.html.
Dr. Jones said the primary purpose of Areté is to inform the Honors College students about past and upcoming events; special academic and extra-curricular opportunities; and student scholarships, travel-abroad experiences and awards. The information is also shared with faculty, staff, Honors alumni and prospective Honors students.
