Green, Ky. - Four Western Kentucky University students will be spending the summer of 2008 with the U.S. Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation Overseas Intern Program.
Lora Curl of Brandenburg, Tyler Graham of Bowling Green, Kristen Drapp of Cincinnati and Meredith Freeland of Bowling Green will receive roundtrip transportation, lodging and a weekly meal allowance during their overseas experience.
“These students will get the experience of a lifetime,” said Tammie Stenger-Ramsey, assistant professor of recreation administration at WKU. “They will be gaining professional experience from Morale, Welfare and Recreation, one of the largest providers of recreation services in our country, while providing an invaluable service to the members of the armed forces and their family members who are overseas. Moreover, they will get to experience a different culture and will get to see another part of the world.”
Curl, a recreation administration major with minors in outdoor leadership and American Humanics nonprofit management, will complete her internship in youth services at Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands, Hawaii.
Graham, a recreation administration major with minors in outdoor leadership and tourism, will complete his internship in outdoor recreation and information, tickets and travel programs at the Naval Support Activity Sigonella in Sicily, Italy.
Drapp, a recreation administration major, will complete her internship in sports and fitness at Commander Fleet Activities in Sasebo, Japan.
Freeland, a recreation administration major, will complete her internship in outdoor recreation at the naval base in Yokosuka, Japan.
“The Navy Overseas Internships are extremely competitive,” Stenger-Ramsey said. “They only take students who excel academically and who have significant paraprofessional experiences. It is exciting for the Recreation Administration program to have four students selected to this internship program because it means we are turning out some top quality students who will be leaders in a global community.”
To be eligible, students must be working toward a degree in recreation, food and beverage, hospitality, exercise science, sport management, child development or other related field, have a 3.0 grade-point average or better and have experience in their field of interest.
