Bowling
Green, Ky. - Bardstown High School was unanimously named champion of the State Drama Festival conducted by the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) at Western Kentucky University.
All four judges ranked Bardstown’s production of the one-act play “Enigma Variations” No. 1 in competition held Dec. 12 at WKU’s Russell Miller Theatre.
Daviess County placed second with its performance of “Chamber Music” while Lexington Catholic finished third with “Medea.”
Also competing were John Hardin High School and Louisville Ballard.
A 10-member All-Star Cast was also selected. Heading the list were Connor McGinnis of Bardstown in the role of Fifi LeBlanc and Tamara Kamara of John Hardin as Tibutha in “The Crucible.”
Also honored were the three chorus members in Lexington Catholic’s “Medea,” Jessie Weinmann, Heather Iwinski and Julia Gruhot, along with Zack Davis, Tori Vance and Richard Middaugh of Bardstown, and Kat Lee and Mary Newton of Daviess County.
Other members of the champion Bardstown cast were Anya Mathis, Katelyn Bryant, Rose Marshall, Victoria Stallings, Elise Jones, Amanda Nathan, Krupa Patel, Spencer Floyd and Spencer Smith.
Kevin Holladay directed the state champion production for Bardstown. Karen Feldhaus and Renea Eaden are the Daviess County directors and Nathan West is the director for Lexington Catholic.
The Kentucky High School Speech League is headquartered at WKU’s Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center, which is also the site of Russell Miller Theatre. Jim Turner, a member of the WKU Department of Communication faculty, is executive director of KHSSL.
Serving as judges were Darlene Gooch, a veteran actress who is director of Main Street Russellville; retired WKU librarian Dr. Sally Ann Stricker, who has experience in every phase of theatre; and Robyn Ford and Kim Jenkins, who are board members of the Capitol Arts Youth Theatre in Bowling Green and have extensive drama backgrounds.
The state drama festival was a coordinated effort between KHSSL and the WKU technical area of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
