Bowling
Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green Western Choral Society will conduct ensemble auditions on Jan. 28 for the spring performance of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.”
Auditions will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center room 358, the office of Choral Society Musical Director Paul Hondorp. Dr. Hondorp also is the director of Choral Music Activities at Western Kentucky University.
BGWCS membership is open to people of all ages from all walks of life who are interested in choral masterworks. Auditions are required for new members only. An audition appointment is not necessary; individuals wishing to audition should be at FAC 358 at the specified time. Choral experience is helpful but not necessary.
Orff’s “Carmina Burana” may sound like just another classical work, but once heard or sung, many people, particularly movie buffs, will recognize “O Fortuna” – the opening number – from action/adventure soundtracks of movies, such as “Conan, the Barbarian,” “Die Hard,” “Excalibur,” “Natural Born Killers” and “Badlands.” Orff’s music also has been the backdrop for numerous TV shows and advertising commercials, both here and internationally.
The Choral Society’s weekly rehearsals are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays throughout the spring semester in Fine Arts Center room 181 (Band Room), with the first rehearsal to be held immediately following the Jan. 28 auditions. Regular and special rehearsals are subject to change, so Choral Society members are encouraged to check the calendar at www.wku.edu/sing
The BGWCS is a unique entity in the community and region. It provides opportunities for participants to perform several major concerts each year and an opportunity to perform major works for chorus and orchestra.
Currently, BGWCS membership numbers about 95, including accountants, administrators, church workers, custodial works, doctors, educators, lawyers, radio broadcasters, retirees, small business owners and students. In addition to Bowling Green/Warren County, singers come from several surrounding counties, such as Allen, Barren, Simpson and Logan.
Hondorp said his goal is to increase the number of performers to about 150, and he encourages anyone interested to audition and join the Choral Society.
