Statewide TRiO Day Celebration At WKU

February 8, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University will host the 2008 statewide TRiO Day celebration, on Saturday, Feb. 16.  More than 500 students from 15 institutions across the state are expected to attend.

For more than 30 years, TRiO Programs (Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Veterans Upward Bound, Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Centers and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program) have been providing valuable support services to help students who are economically disadvantaged or from working families to successfully enter college and graduate.

Attendees of the TRiO Day event will have an opportunity to join in a variety of activities and workshops, including campus tours, enrichment sessions with titles such as “The Price of Your Image”; “Student Advisory 101”; “Career Planning”; and “Walk it out: How to Be a Student Leader” plus student academic competitions: Academic Bowl, High-Q, Scholars Bowl and SSS/McNair Debate. Registration will be held in the Downing University Center.

During the afternoon, all TRiO Day participants will attend an awards ceremony which will include several guest speakers. The master of ceremony will be Chris George, vice-president of the Kentucky Association of Educational Program Personnel (KAEOPP) and chair of Trio Day.  As part of the closing ceremony two students will win $500 scholarships to WKU, the scholarships have been donated by WKU Enrollment Management. One student will also win a laptop computer.

WKU Provost Barbara Burch will welcome the TRiO participants and the featured speaker will be Abraham Williams from the Bowling Green Housing Authority.  There will also be live entertainment provided by the local youth group Kaleidoscope.

The day will conclude with presentations of the awards to student winners of the morning competitions. The highlight of these awards will be a grand prize of a computer that will go to one student in attendance.

TRiO Day was enacted by Congress in 1986 “to turn the attention of the nation to the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives” through access to higher education.
