Heart Transplant Surgeon To Visit WKU March 4-5

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Robert E. Michler, an internationally known cardiothoracic surgeon, is the 2008 Boyd-Lubker Visiting Scholar at Western Kentucky University.

Dr. Michler, professor and chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and director of the Heart Center at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, will visit WKU March 4-5.

His lecture, “Truth or Consequences: Heart Health and the Media,” will begin at 7 p.m. March 5 in Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium. The Boyd-Lubker Visiting Scholar Series is free and open to the public.
Dr. Michler and his cardiothoracic surgery team are advancing the use of minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery procedures.

He is the chairman and founder of Heart Care International, a not-for-profit organization that performs pediatric heart surgery in underserved regions of the world.

Dr. Michler has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in cardiothoracic surgery and heart transplantation. He has also received numerous honors and awards for his work, including “Person of the Week” by ABC World News, the Pace Humanitarian Award, and The Order of Christopher Columbus by the Dominican Republic.

Before joining the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Michler held the John G. and Jeanne Bonnet McCoy Endowed Chair, Professor of Surgery, and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He also served as the Associate Director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Michler also was on the faculty of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, served as director of the Cardiac Transplant Program and was a tenured Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University.
He is a graduate of Harvard University and Dartmouth Medical School and completed his residency at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
