Unique Gift From U.S. Bank To Support Various WKU Programs

February 13, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Artwork from Tompkinsville native Joe Downing was donated to Western Kentucky University as part of a $100,000 gift from U.S. Bank in March 2007.

Downing, who passed away in December 2007, was the brother of former WKU President Dero Downing. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Joe Downing attended WKU, where he studied art.  In 1950, he obtained a degree in optometry from Northern Illinois College of Optometry and studied at the Chicago Art Institute.

Craig Browning, regional president of U.S. Bank, in cooperation with buyer Harvey Johnston and WKU’s Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations Rick DuBose, arranged a transaction that included some of Joe Downing’s work to be donated to WKU.  Browning said U.S. Bank has long been a supporter and collector of the arts.  With a substantial collection of art growing, Browning felt that the overflow could be put to better use.

“A local art collector (Johnston) had previously made me aware of his interest in one of the Downing pieces,” Browning said.  “When I approached him with the opportunity to purchase the Downing, along with a few other pieces, and shared with him my desire to see proceeds benefit WKU, he was even more inclined to pursue the opportunity.”

Paula Jarboe, WKU Foundation Trust accountant, said $83,425 was raised from artwork of various artists with, $66,100 of that attributed to Joe Downing pieces.  U.S. Bank donated 26 pieces of artwork and $16,575 in cash, bringing the total gift amount to $100,000.

Tom Hiles, WKU’s vice president for Institutional Advancement, said: “U.S. Bank has been a loyal supporter and an important business partner with WKU.  This is a unique gift, and we are very grateful for their support of the arts.  U.S. Bank has also supported athletics, the business school, and many other University priorities.”

While U.S. Bank contributes to several organizations, WKU holds a special place with Browning.  A 1987 College of Business graduate, Browning said: “By contributing to WKU, U.S. Bank not only helps ensure a bright future for our children but also assists in sustaining a major component of the healthy economic machine we enjoy in south central Kentucky.  Investing in WKU—a wise investment in our future—is a wise investment in our quality of life.”

Browning worked closely with DuBose and Hiles to ensure the maximum benefit would be achieved, with designations to the Kentucky Museum and WKU Athletics.

“I had a personal desire to assist the arts, scholarships, and sports programs with this particular contribution,” Browning said.  “With their assistance, we were able to design a match of optimum benefit to all.”
