Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University has named Dr. Cornell H. Menking as its Chief International
Officer.
As WKU strives to become “a leading American university with international reach,” Dr. Menking will provide leadership for this institutional priority.
The Chief International Officer will report to the Provost, will provide leadership for the University International Education Council, and will act in concert with the deans and the faculty of each college in the university. He will have oversight responsibility for international student and scholar services (including student recruitment), study/work/internship abroad programs, international area studies, international exchange agreements, and international faculty and staff development initiatives.
Dr. Menking has 21 years of experience in internationally oriented education and 10 years of experience in higher education leadership. He also has lived abroad for 13 years.
Dr. Menking comes to WKU from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Cumbaya, Ecuador, where he had worked since 2001. He had served as director of the school’s Office of International Programs since August 2006 and oversaw the largest, single-institution international exchange program office in South America.
He also had been a professor and director of graduate programs in education at the Ecuador school since August 2001. While there, Dr. Menking also was chair of the Institutional Effectiveness Team, SACS program auditor, Entrepreneurial Team member and assistant dean of the graduate school.
Dr. Menking also served as an instructor/clinical supervisor and several other roles at the University of New Mexico from 1996 to 2000, worked at the Yakutsk Teacher Training Institute in Russia from 1993 to 1996, served as outreach coordinator/instructor for the Albuquerque Literacy Program in 1992-93, was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone, West Africa, from 1988 to 1991, and was an instructor at the Center of English Language in Dallas from 1986 to 1987.
He received a bachelor of arts in history from Southern Methodist University in 1986, a master of arts in foundations of education from the University of New Mexico in 1998 and his doctorate in educational thought and sociocultural studies from the University of New Mexico in 2003.
