EcoFlix Film Festival Begins Tonight

February 21, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - The public is invited to attend the EcoFlix Film Festival, a series of powerful environmental films scheduled to be shown at WKU this semester.

The themes center on contemporary energy concerns; rural impacts from energy and waste systems; and urban “revisioning” for a more sustainable future.  Sustainable development means living in a way that preserves resources, so future generations can also enjoy a good quality of life and a thriving environment.  The screenings are free and open to the public.

The series begins tonight (Feb. 20) with “Sludge,” which chronicles the aftermath of the Martin County coal sludge disaster that occurred in 2000 and the threat posed today by the coal sludge ponds throughout the region, and “A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash,” an unforgettable, intensively-researched film which looks at the “uncomfortable realities of a society both addicted to fossil fuels and blissfully unaware of the looming ‘peak oil’ crisis.”  A complete schedule of films can be found online at http://www.wku.edu/green/ecoflix.

Films will be shown on WKU’s campus on most Wednesday evenings at 7 in Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium, and again at 11 a.m. Thursdays in the theatre space at The Red Zone in Downing University Center – where viewers can buy their lunch and eat while they watch. An ID card scanner will be available to students who attend for class and activity credit.

The EcoFlix Film Festival is part of a collaboration between WKU’s Greentoppers Students for Campus Sustainability (http://www.wku.edu/green/), BGGreen Partnership for a Sustainable Community (http://www.wku.edu/bggreen), and others.

Community members, students, faculty and staff are all invited to view these timely and important films.  Brief discussions will follow the film showings.
