WKU To Offer Fiction Writing Workshop In July

February 04, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - During the 2008 Summer Sessions, Western Kentucky University’s English Department will offer a Fiction Writing workshop for advanced writers at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The workshop is scheduled for July 7-25, and students from universities across Kentucky and Tennessee have been invited to take advantage of the unique opportunity.  Dr. Lee Martin, visiting professor and head of the Creative Writing program at The Ohio State University, will teach the course.

Dr. Martin was a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He is the author of the novels, “Quakertown” and “The Bright Forever”; a story collection, “The Least You Need to Know,” which won the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction; and two memoirs, “From Our House” and “Turning Bones.” His stories and essays have appeared in Harper’s, The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, Story, DoubleTake, Glimmer Train, Creative Nonfiction, Fourth Genre, River Teeth, Shenandoah, New England Review and Prairie Schooner.

Dr. Karen Schneider, head of WKU’s English Department, said: “Our creative writing students are really excited by the opportunity to work with a writer the caliber of Lee Martin, and WKU is delighted to share that opportunity with advanced students from WKU and other universities. Happily, this fiction workshop is the premiere event of what we hope will become a regular addition to our dynamic creative writing program.”

The workshop is geared toward advanced undergraduate and graduate fiction writers. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn from a highly respected author who has been hailed by critics as “a writer to watch and love.”
