WKU Habitat Chapter To Dedicate Centennial Build Home

February 26, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Habitat for Humanity chapter will dedicate its Centennial Build house Saturday (March 1).

The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. at 433 W. Main St. in Bowling Green. Ava Barber and her family moved into the home in late 2007.

“The dedication will join everyone who contributed resources, labor, time, finances and hope,” said Dana Adams, co-president of the WKU student chapter. “We are celebrating the completion of the house as a group.”

The chapter began construction of the house in fall 2006 as part of WKU’s Centennial celebration. The chapter has raised more than $50,000 to fund the project.

More than 100 students and other volunteers have assisted in the construction. Numerous businesses, community groups and others have made donations and supported the project.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that exists to eradicate substandard housing worldwide by working in partnership with working class poor families to help them construct and purchase their own home.
The campus chapter works under the Bowling Green-Warren County Habitat for Humanity affiliate in conjunction with the Youth Programs office at Habitat International.

In recent weeks, the WKU chapter has been working with the Bowling Green-Warren County Habitat for Humanity affiliate and the Bowling Green Fire Department to collect recyclable items from nine houses on the site of WKU’s new education building.

“We have been working side by side to fulfill our partnership with the local affiliate for this deconstruction project,” said Jessica Tinnell, co-president of the WKU student chapter. “It’s great to see so many people from the community involved, including the Bowling Green Fire Department. The deconstruction thus far has been very successful with the local affiliate being able to bring in at least eight truck loads full of items. Partnering with WKU and the fire department on this project has been a very beneficial opportunity.”

Items salvaged during the demolition of the homes on Normal Drive and Regents Avenue will be taken to Habitat’s ReStore while other recyclable goods will be sold to help fund the student chapter’s work.

Volunteers are working at the houses from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
