Sexual Assault Awareness Month Activities Scheduled

February 28, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University and Hope Harbor will present several events in March as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“This month gives us the opportunity to increase the awareness of sexual violence and its effects on the entire community,” said Elizabeth Mohon, WKU’s sexual assault services coordinator. “Sexual violence does more than impact the victim’s emotional, social and physical well being. It impacts friends, families and others they come in contact with. This is why it’s so important to increase this awareness and help to be a voice to those who might not be able to speak out themselves. Help us to ‘Break the Silence’ against sexual violence.”

The Sexual Assault Awareness Month schedule for WKU and the Bowling Green community includes the following events:

March 3: Clothesline Project, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at WKU’s South Campus.
March 4: Healthy Days, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. at Preston Health and Activities Center.
March 4: Sex Signals, 7 p.m. at Downing University Center Theatre.

The Sexual Assault Awareness Committee includes Hope Harbor, WKU departments (Health Services, Campus Activities Board, Women’s Studies, Counseling and Testing Center), and community agencies, businesses and organizations (Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Warren RECC, Yuki’s Japanese Restaurant, Bowling Green Junior Woman’s Club).

“It takes the efforts of a community to work together to help increase the awareness of sexual violence,” Mohon said.
