Bowling
Green, Ky. - WKYU-PBS will be off-the-air during some daylight periods in early to mid December due to extensive tower work, but Insight cable viewers in Bowling Green will not be affected. The outages are expected to begin today (Dec. 9).
WKYU-PBS, channel 24, digital 24.1 and Insight channel 11, broadcasts from the same tower as WBKO-TV and while workers are installing tower equipment for the commercial station, the PBS-affiliated station must also turn off both its analog and digital transmitters for safety reasons. WKYU-PBS is Bowling Green’s local public television service, based at Western Kentucky University.
The tower work will take place only during daylight hours and WKYU-PBS will be back on the air in the evenings on those days. However, those watching on Insight channel 11 in Bowling Green won’t be affected by the outages because of a technical difference in the way the signal is delivered to that cable system.
The exact schedule of the tower work is highly variable and uncertain due to weather and other factors, so the latest, up-to-date information about these outages will be posted on WKYU-PBS’ website, wkyupbs.org.
WKYU-PBS broadcasts the only locally-based, locally-programmed public television service to south central Kentucky and northern Tennessee in both analog and digital. The station will turn off its analog transmitter for good on Feb. 17, 2009, as mandated by the Federal Communications Commission.
Viewers with older televisions who watch TV with an antenna or rabbit ears will need a digital set top box while those with cable or satellite service will not need to make any changes. Forty-dollar coupons for set top boxes are available from the federal government by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 or logging on to dtv2009.gov.
