Green, Ky. - Bardstown High School repeated as champion of the State Drama Festival conducted by the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) on Wednesday (Dec. 10) at Western Kentucky University.
The State Drama Festival allows high schools to perform one-act plays.
Seven high schools from across the Commonwealth competed at the Russell Miller Theatre on WKU’s campus.
Bardstown took first with “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” Daviess County High School placed second with its performance of “Between Daylight and Booneville” while Louisville Ballard High School placed third with “Perfect.”
Also competing were Ohio County High School, Grant County High School, Larry A. Ryle High School and Lexington Catholic High School.
The Top Performers were Anya Mathis and Spencer Smith, both of Bardstown High School.
The All-Star Cast consisted of: Nupur Kantamneni of Louisville Ballard, Mary Newton and Kat Lee of Daviess County, Bracken Harpole of Ohio County, Julia Hunt of Larry A. Ryle, Emily Lovejoy and John David Fernandez of Lexington Catholic and Hannah Bowman of Bardstown.
Other members of the champion Bardstown cast were Zack Davis, Elise Davis, Rose Mitchell, Amanda Nathan and Kelsi Weis. They are directed by Mike Thacker.
The Kentucky High School Speech League is headquartered at WKU’s Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center, which is also the site of Russell Miller Theatre. Stacey Gish, a member of the WKU Department of Communication faculty, is executive director of KHSSL.
Serving as judges were S. Darlene Gooch, a veteran actress who is director of Main Street Russellville; Robyn Ford, board member and volunteer with the Capitol Arts Youth Theatre in Bowling Green; Ashley Gentry, Interim Artistic Director with the Capitol Arts Theatre; and Corey Morrison, Academy Acting Instructor with the Capitol Arts Youth Theatre.
The state drama festival was a coordinated effort between KHSSL and the technical area of the WKU Department of Theatre and Dance.
