'Odd Girl Out' Author Rachel Simmons To Lecture

Bowling Green, Ky. - Rachel Simmons, author of “Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls,” will visit Bowling Green on Sept. 15 as part of Western Kentucky University’s Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series.

Simmons’ lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at Greenwood High School’s gymnasium. The event is free and open to the public.

In “Odd Girl Out,” Simmons explores the phenomenon of bullying between girls. She works internationally with girls, parents and teachers to develop strategies to address bullying and empower girls and has appeared on programs such as Oprah, Today and Dateline NBC.

A graduate of Vassar College, Simmons has worked for Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani as an Urban Fellow and for Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York. In 1998, she won a Rhodes Scholarship from New York and attended Oxford University, where she began studying female aggression.

She is the founding director of the Girls Leadership Institute, a summer program for middle and high school girls, and serves as a consultant to schools around the country. “Odd Girl Out” was adapted into a highly acclaimed Lifetime television movie.
