Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green Western Choral Society, a campus and community partnership of people of all ages and from all walks of life, is recruiting new members for the 2008-09 concert series. The ensemble focuses on masterworks for chorus and orchestra.
According to Dr. Paul Hondorp, Western Kentucky University’s Director of Choral Activities and the BGWCS Artistic Director, last year the Choral Society had about 130 singers; this year the goal is to increase that number to at least 150.
While both female and male singers are sought, Dr. Hondorp hopes there will be a significant increase in tenors, baritones and basses. The reason: November’s concert will feature Johannes Brahms’ “Alto Rhapsody with Male Chorus and Orchestra,” a work, which as the title suggests, requires a full complement of male voices.
A second featured work on that same program will be “Lux Aeterna” by popular contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen.
Choral Society auditions will be from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, in Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center room 348, Dr. Hondorp’s office. Auditions are for new members only; returning singers need not re-audition. Appointments are not necessary; just show up at the announced time, fill out a form and sing. Nothing should be prepared.
The first rehearsal will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 in FAC 181, with weekly rehearsals scheduled for the same time and place on subsequent Mondays. Additional rehearsals prior to performances will be announced later.
