WKU Student Research Conference Set For April 12

April 07, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - More than 150 Western Kentucky University students will be presenting their research and creative work on Saturday (April 12) at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center.

“As part of the student engagement focus at WKU, these students have been involved in hands-on research and creative activities and they will be sharing their work through oral and poster presentations and display of their creative works,” said Dr. Sadiq Shah, associate vice president for Research and Economic Development.

The Student Research Conference begins at 7:30 a.m. WKU Provost Barbara Burch will make opening remarks at 8 a.m. The all-day conference is open to the public.

“These students are the future creative talent and the pipeline of the workforce for our regional businesses,” Dr. Shah said. “This is a unique opportunity for regional businesses and the general public to see the talent pool and WKU’s research capabilities in a broad spectrum of disciplines.”

Academic areas represented at this conference include chemistry, psychology, religious studies, graphic design, film studies, geography, physics, biology, public health, geology, electrical engineering, recreation, communication, mechanical engineering, history, English, philosophy, robotics, genetics, climatology, theater, biomedical, astronomy, art history, agriculture, nursing, computer science, and anthropology.

“The conference also presents an opportunity for regional businesses to see how they can engage these talented students in solving their problems with guidance from appropriate faculty members in their respective disciplines,” Dr. Shah said. “We want to interface WKU’s research capacity with the private sector to help create win-win solutions to help support regional economic development.”

Several concurrent oral presentation sessions will start at 8:30 a.m. At noon students will present posters on their research to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas among various disciplines and to develop a better appreciation for the impact of the research and creative activities by students.

The Student Research Conference is organized by the Student Research Council and is a collaborative effort by faculty members from Gordon Ford College of Business, Ogden College of Science and Engineering, Potter College of Arts & Letters, College of Health and Human Services, College of Education and Behavioral Science, Honors College, Bowling Green Community College, the University College, local chapter of Sigma Xi, Office of Research and Economic Development and Academic Affairs.
