Bowling
Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s concrete canoe and steel bridge teams have qualified for national competitions.
Students from WKU’s civil engineering program placed first in several events at the Ohio Valley Regional Student Conference April 2-5 in Youngstown, Ohio.
WKU results included the following:
*Concrete canoe: First place in best overall, best oral presentation, best final product, men’s slalom/endurance race, women’s slalom/endurance race, men’s sprint race, women’s sprint race, spirit of competition; third in best design paper.
WKU has won the regional concrete canoe title for 13 consecutive years and has finished in the national top 10 for seven of the past eight years. The 2008 national concrete canoe competition is scheduled for June 19-21 in Montreal.
Concrete canoe team members are: David Coomes of Philpot (co-captain), Sean O’Bryan of Whitesville (co-captain), Catie Gay of Evansville, Ind., Kurt Smith of New Haven, Corey Shive of Knob Lick, Ben Matthews of Alvaton, J.R. Vance of Alvaton, Chris Stanley of New Haven, Casey Pedigo of Glasgow, Robert Gentry of Owensboro, Blake Williams of Glasgow, Aaron Wallace of Glasgow, Nathan Rush of Bowling Green, Kyle Turpen of Nancy, Erica Rigney of Mount Washington, Jessica Acosta of Madisonville, Sarah Bertke of Reynolds Station, Cory Jones of Berea, Chris Leachman of Campbellsville, Clint Ervin of Greensburg, Steve Haynes of Bowling Green.
*Steel bridge: First in construction speed and aesthetics; third in best overall. The national steel bridge competition will be held May 23-24 in Gainesville, Fla.
Steel bridge team members are: Brad Hall of Russellville (co-captain), Matt White of Mount Juliet, Tenn. (co-captain), Steven Hupper of Belfair, Wash., Brandon P. Loague of Bowling Green, Brad Dobina of Louisville, James P. Tilley of Paducah, David Morse of Kingwood, Texas, Christian Crear of Clarksville, Tenn., Jonathan Broc Porter of Beechmont, J.P. Saalwaechter of Bowling Green, Andy Southard of Hanson, Alex Lossing of Bellevue, Wash., Bryan Embry of Bowling Green.
*Technical Paper: David Russell of Murray, first place.
*Surveying: First in equipment setup. Team members are Wesley Magill of Nashville, Tenn., James P. Tilley of Paducah, Clint Ervin of Greensburg, Ben Monarch of Bowling Green.
*AutoCAD Drafting: Wesley Magill of Nashville, Tenn., third in best overall.
*Wastewater Treatment: Darren Back of Campton and Lizabeth Likins of Leitchfield, first in most economical apparatus, second in best overall.
Other schools competing in the Ohio Valley Regional included University of Kentucky, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State College, Cleveland State University, University of Dayton, Geneva College, Ohio University, University of Pittsburgh, Stark State College of Technology, Ohio State University, Youngstown State University and University of Akron.
