Green, Ky. - The American Red Cross and Western Kentucky University Greeks have set high expectations for the outcome and success for the 2008 Blood Drive.
The Blood Drive will be held Monday-Wednesday (April 21-23) at WKU’s Preston Health and Activities Center.
Blood Drive Greek Week chairmen have set even higher goals this year than years past. Last year the blood drive produced 1,103 productive units of blood for the American Red Cross. This year they hope to reach 1,500 productive units.
“Success is getting what you want,” said senior Bryan Carrico. “We hope to reach out to the community and beat our record from last year.”
This year the Blood Drive chairs have set several goals and have already reached one of them. The Tug blood drive was held on April 7 with a goal of receiving 100 productive units. The total was 150 productive units of blood.
Blood donors are encouraged to register online at www.givelife.org and enter the sponsored code WKU for an appointment to reduce the amount of waiting. To donate blood it usually takes about 45-60 minutes. You must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
According to the American Red Cross website, each whole blood donation can help save as many as three people’s lives and 25 percent or more of us will require blood at least once in our lifetime. All presenting donors will be entered into a drawing for a Nintendo Wii. There will also be free Bone Marrow Typing offered when donating blood.
“We are really excited about this years blood drive and we really hope everyone will come out and support the WKU Greeks,” said junior Diana DeRosa-Reynolds.
WKU Greeks received a special award last year for the highest units of blood donated in the region.
