Sallie Bingham To Read At WKU April 15

April 07, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Feminist author, poet and playwright Sallie Bingham will read from her new collection of short stories on April 15 at Western Kentucky University as the final event of the 2007-08 Creative Writing Series.

Bingham will read from “Red Car” at 7 p.m. in room 103 of the Garrett Conference Center. Her appearance is sponsored by the Creative Writing Committee of the WKU English Department. A reception and book signing will follow.

“Red Car” is a collection written in her signature style—discreet, sly prose circling taboo subjects. In these 12 stories, Bingham travels from the beaches of Normandy shortly after the second World War, to modern-day Brittany, Santa Fe, Florida, and Southern Colorado to situate her wide range of characters.

Bingham published her first novel with Houghton Mifflin in 1961. Since then she has published four collections of short stories, four novels and a memoir. She was book editor for The Courier-Journal in Louisville and has been a director of the National Book Critics Circle. She is the founder of The Kentucky Foundation for Women.
