Green, Ky. - Folk artist Willie Darnell Rascoe will conduct a driftwood sculpture workshop Sept. 29 at the Kentucky Library & Museum at Western Kentucky University.
The workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The registration fee for participants is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 14.
Rascoe began his hobby in 1974 using driftwood from Lake Barkley. All of what Rascoe sees and reveals in the wood comes from visions and feelings. “I like to use faces a lot because they are expressive and express people,” Rascoe explained. “I like to stay close to nature.”
He uses mostly wood with the occasional appearance of animal bones, shells, stones or wires. He was “discovered” by Ms. Lucille Allen at the Aaron McNeil Center in Hopkinsville. Thanks to her publicity, he was able to hold his first exhibit one year later at the Trigg County Farmers Bank in Cadiz.
Rascoe’s work can be seen throughout the country in exhibits, and hanging in places such as the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Foundation, and The Kentucky Historical Society among others. In addition, he produces two works a year for the Kentucky Folk Arts Center.
Many state parks and forests have taken an interest in Rascoe’s works due to their unique beauty and his use of Kentucky Driftwood and natural elements as his media. Stains are often created from berries and sawdust and sculptures are adorned with bone and shells and other fragments of the earth.
“We are excited to offer such a unique opportunity for members of our community to work alongside such a successful artist,” said Cindy Troutman, marketing coordinator for University Libraries.
