Green, Ky. - Kentucky House Speaker Jody Richards will be honored by Western Kentucky University’s Elizabeth McWhorter-Harden Forensic Alumni Association on Oct. 11.
Richards will receive the Kentucky Speaker of the Year, an award that recognizes an exemplary communicator.
The award will be presented in conjunction with the Kentucky Public Speaking Conference at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center. The dinner begins at 6 p.m.
“We are delighted that Jody Richards is our first Kentucky Speaker of the Year,” said Judy Woodring, director of WKU’s award-winning forensics program. “Jody is an excellent example of someone who has used his public speaking skills for the betterment of the people of Kentucky.”
Richards, who has represented the 20th District in the Kentucky House of Representatives since 1975, was elected speaker in 1995.
Richards is the owner of Superior Books, Inc., a wholesale book sales and distribution company in Bowling Green, and is a longtime member of Greenwood Park Church of Christ.
Richards receives his bachelor’s degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and master’s from University of Missouri. He also is a former journalism faculty member at WKU.
The Elizabeth McWhorter-Harden Forensic Alumni Association also will be recognizing inductees into its Hall of Fame. The first four members are Elizabeth McWhorter-Harden, Barbara Burch, Randall Capps and Russell Miller.
