Bowling
Green, Ky. - A renowned authority on what would seem to be the opposing theories of communication and personal privacy is scheduled to consult with professional communicators and speak to the public on how the two concepts can mesh.
Dr. Sandra Petronio will share her expertise on the “world of privacy paradox” while serving as a visiting professor at Western Kentucky University’s Department of Communication Sept. 17-19.
Dr. Petronio is a professor in the Department of Communication Studies at IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) and Core Faculty in the Indiana University Center for Bioethics in the School of Medicine.
During her visit to WKU, Dr. Petronio will consult with the Communication Department faculty, attend classes and make a public appearance.
She will discuss “The World of Privacy Paradox: How We Manage Being Open and Private Simultaneously in Health, Family and Significant Relationships” at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium. The public is invited.
Afterward Dr. Petronio will sign her highly acclaimed book, “Boundaries of Privacy: Dialectics of Disclosure.”
Dr. Petronio has done extensive research in privacy, disclosure and confidentiality, primarily in health and family contexts. She has developed the “Communication Privacy Management” theory and is an award-winning author for a book explaining her theory and how to put it into practice.
Despite her contention that privacy has an important role in certain areas of communication, Dr. Petronio has expertise in health communication, interpersonal relations and family communication. She also believes that academic research is important only if it is converted into useable assets in the everyday world.
Dr. Petronio is associated with the Charles Fairbanks Center of Medical Ethics in Indianapolis, with the Indiana University School of Nursing and with the IU School of Informatics.
She has degrees from The State University of New York at Stony Brook and the University of Michigan and has been a faculty member at the University of Minnesota, Arizona State University and Wright State University.
