Female Muslim Comic Tissa Hami To Perform Sept. 17 At WKU

September 07, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Tissa Hami, one of the few female Muslim stand-up comics in the world, will be performing Sept. 17 at Western Kentucky University.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Mosque” will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Grise Hall Auditorium. Hami’s performance is free and open to the public.

Hami, whose family moved from Iran to Boston the year before the American Embassy hostage crisis in 1979, employs a razor-sharp wit in demolishing stereotypes and developing understanding. She started her career as a comedian in 2002 at a small club in Cambridge, Mass., and performs at comedy clubs, festivals, theaters and colleges nationwide, as well as on behalf of many non-profit organizations and benefits.

Hami earned degrees in international relations from Brown University and Columbia University and has worked as a secretary and admissions officer at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Her performance is sponsored by the WKU Women’s Studies Program, with support from Potter College of Arts & Letters, Office of Diversity Programs, Campus Activities Board and the Rodes-Helm Lecture Series.
