'One Book' Events Begin In October In Bowling Green Area

September 28, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners are pleased to announce that their “One Book” events for children and adults will begin next month.

Author Kirby Larson will start the festivities with a visit to area middle schools Oct. 15 and 16 to discuss her Newberry Honor winning book “Hattie Big Sky.” Books have been purchased for children at each school who participate in the 1READ event for young adults. Students who attended kick-off events at the Bowling Green Public Library and Smiths Grove branch also received free copies.

In November the Book Fest partners’ new “Fall Into Books” program will take place during National Children’s Book Week in Warren, Butler and Simpson counties. Author Pamela Walker of the “Kung Fu Princess” series will visit Butler County schools Nov. 13, and Chris Rumble who writes the “Uncle Stinky” books will attend discussions at schools in Simpson County on Nov. 14. Gail Carson Levine of “Ella Enchanted” fame will make appearances in Warren County Nov. 15 and 16, including a special field trip session for schools at Western Kentucky University’s Downing University Center.

In January events will unfold for the One Campus-One Community-One Book choice, “Days of the Endless Corvette” by Man Martin. This humorous Southern tale is about a genius mechanic who attempts to build a Corvette entirely from spare parts to win back the girl of his dreams. Free books will be available at events in Bowling Green Jan. 24 and 25, with the author visiting the area for public discussions Feb. 28 and 29.

“One Book” events are designed to cultivate the shared experience of people reading and talking about the same book. “One Book” is a project of the SOKY Book Fest partnership which includes WKU Libraries, Bowling Green Public Library and Barnes & Noble Booksellers.
