At Purdue

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Forensic Team placed first in individual events sweepstakes, debate sweepstakes and combined individual events and debate sweepstakes last weekend at the Purdue University “Boilermaker Invitational” in West Lafayette, Ind.
In the team’s first event of the season, WKU placed ahead of Ohio University and Cedarville University in overall sweepstakes. WKU also placed first in debate sweepstakes, ahead of Cedarville University and Wheaton College.
Twenty-two members of the WKU team competed only in debate, extemporaneous speaking and impromptu in the Sept. 14-16 tournament. Twelve out of the 16 advancing debate teams were from WKU, so the team was largely competing against itself in elimination rounds. The following students placed in the final rounds:
Lauren Nelson, a junior from Wheaton, Ill., tournament champion in impromptu speaking, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, fourth parliamentary speaker and quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Adam Heugel).
Kelcey Hathaway, a sophomore from Garden City, Kan., tournament champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, second in parliamentary debate (with Brian Bloss), and 10th parliamentary speaker.
Elizabeth Mullins, a sophomore from Plymouth, Mass., tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Logan Parke) and second parliamentary speaker.
Thomas Schally, a junior from Stillwater, Minn., top parliamentary speaker and quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Chad Meadows).
Logan Parke, a sophomore from Little Rock, Ark., tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Elizabeth Mullins).
Brian Bloss, a junior from Coppell, Texas, second in parliamentary debate (with Kelcey Hathaway) and fourth in extemporaneous speaking.
Dontarius Bailey, a freshman from Fort Inn, S.C., second in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Sarah Spiker, a freshman from Snohomish, Wash., quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Jason Carey), and seventh parliamentary speaker.
Jessica Furgerson, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, fourth in impromptu speaking and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Rachel Mosley).
Amber Williams, a freshman from Kokomo, Ind., semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Rob Strobel) and ninth parliamentary speaker.
Jason Carey, a sophomore from Hutchinson, Kan., semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Sarah Spiker).
Kaleb Jessee, a sophomore from Garden City, Kan., semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Rob Strobel, a freshman from Lexington, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Amber Williams).
Brandon Merrell, a freshman from Snohomish, Wash., third parliamentary speaker and quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Josh Ramsey).
Chad Meadows, a senior from Owensboro, fifth parliamentary speaker and quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Thomas Schally).
Adam Heugel, a senior from Rosenburg, Texas, quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Lauren Nelson).
Todd Rainey, a freshman from Indianapolis, quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Alex Traxler, a freshman from Simpsonville, S.C., quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Josh Ramsey, a sophomore from Fort Scott, Kan., quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate (with Brandon Merrell).
Rachel Mosley, a junior from Lake Tahoe, Calif., eighth parliamentary speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Jessica Furgerson).
