Winter Term A Popular Option For WKU Students

October 19, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students saw great success with the first two years of Winter Term classes, which ran the last three weeks of the university’s winter break.

Enrollment for the Winter Term classes in 2006 and 2007 exceeded all expectations. Enrollment in 2006 was 1,594 while 2007 enrollment increased 22.5 percent to 1,952.

Classes for 2008 Winter Term will be held Jan. 2-18. Beth Laves, Winter Term director, expects a record number of enrollments again.

Classes will be offered on the main campus and online as well as at the regional campuses in Glasgow, Elizabethtown/Fort Knox and Owensboro. Study Abroad opportunities will be available during Winter Term in Costa Rica, Great Britain, the Yucatan, the Bahamas, Germany, India and Mexico.

The WKU Winter Term is a great way for students to get more out of their winter break and help them avoid overloading their class schedules in the spring and fall semesters.

Another advantage is that students can take classes that are typically difficult to get into, and they can catch up on courses that were previously dropped.

A limited number of Gatekeeper courses are available for students who qualify. There are some large enrollment freshman and sophomore courses that can sometimes become barriers to students moving toward degree completion. For students who have not had success in the fall semester, Gatekeeper courses during Winter Term offer students smaller classes and individualized instruction to help them be successful.

Financial aid, on-campus housing, meal plans, computer labs and other student services are also available.
Registration for Winter Term courses is available now. Winter Term is a unit of the Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO). For information, visit the Winter Term website at www.wku.edu/winter.
