Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University will bring donors and students together Oct. 18 for the seventh annual Scholarship Celebration.
About 400 to 450 donors and students are expected for the dinner at 6 p.m. at Diddle Arena. The Scholarship Celebration recognizes benefactors who have established endowed scholarships and provides them with an opportunity to meet the recipients.
Speakers include WKU President Gary Ransdell; Tom Hiles, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the WKU Foundation; Alex Downing, president of the College Heights Foundation; and Doris Moody, human resources director at Logan Aluminum.
Moody will discuss the Caleb Slaton-Logan Aluminum Endowed Scholarship, which was established after 11-year-old Caleb was struck in the chest by a baseball and later died. Stan Slaton, Caleb’s father, and Tyler Porter, a Lewisburg freshman who is one of the four recipients of the scholarship this year, also are scheduled to speak.
The Caleb Slaton-Logan Aluminum Scholarship was established in July 2002 and 20 awards have been given through 2007-08.
The total of endowed scholarships in the WKU Foundation, Hilltopper Athletic Foundation and the College Heights Foundation is $48.2 million. In 2006-07, WKU awarded $4.6 million in endowed scholarships. Nearly 30 new scholarships were created for 2007-08.
