WKU To Host Annual Journalism Scholars Day On Friday

October 22, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Journalism Scholars Day, a 35-year tradition at Western Kentucky University, promises to attract some 350 Kentucky high school journalism students to campus Friday (Oct. 26) for a four-hour conference that will include breakout sessions, a keynote address, write-off contest and yearbook contest awards ceremony.

Student media advisers from Owensboro to Louisville will bring their staffs to attend sessions taught by WKU faculty and students as well as other journalism professionals.

The conference goal is to encourage excellence in high school media classes. It also will provide high school students with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills. Staffers and their advisers will attend 26 breakout sessions with topics ranging from yearbook design and photography to being a weatherman.
Eighteen schools have already registered to attend. According to Journalism Scholars Day director Jackie Bretz, it’s not too late to register.

“We moved all the JSD activities to Downing University Center so we may accommodate more students,” Bretz said. “We welcome all high school students and their teachers to learn more about the media and how to improve their school publications and broadcasts.”

For two students, however, JSD will mean competing in a writing contest in hopes of winning a scholarship to attend WKU.

Facilitated by Jim Highland, the write-off contest will require students to compose news stories about the keynote address on computers, self-edit and turn them in all in under an hour, just like in a real newsroom. Highland and College Heights Herald staffers will judge the stories.

Dr. Dean Kahler, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs—Enrollment Management, and Highland will award two $500 scholarships to attend WKU to the best two writers.

Giving the keynote will be H.L. Hall, author and nationally known scholastic journalism authority. His topic is “Make Every Word Count.”
