'Say Goodbye To Granddad's Retirement' To Premiere Oct. 22

October 3, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - It’s never too early to start planning for retirement – even if you’re a college student or recent graduate.

Western Kentucky University’s Center for Gerontology invites the campus and the community to a world premiere screening of “Say Goodbye to Granddad’s Retirement” at 8 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Downing University Center Theater.

“Things have changed in the past two decades and the film shows a lot of exciting possibilities for our current WKU students and young graduates to think about,” said Dr. Dana Burr Bradley, director of the Center for Gerontology.

Written and directed by Tony Walker, a 1983 WKU graduate, the film features WKU students and professors. Dr. Bradley and Dr. Brian Strow from WKU’s Department of Economics served as consultants.

Beginning with a history lesson about the origins of retirement in America, “Say Goodbye to Granddad’s Retirement” quickly moves on to why it will be difficult, if not impossible, for young people to retire like their grandparents.

Using a skillful interplay between young and older interviewees, the documentary considers universal, yet personal questions such as:  Is retirement is a possibility?  If so, when might it occur? How much money is enough? What would someone like to do in retirement? What role might employers have? What about inflation and the future cost of health care?

Ultimately, the documentary offers hope by challenging the audience to seize the many opportunities that lie ahead – opportunities their grandparents could have only imagined.
