Bowling
Green, Ky. - On Monday (Oct. 29), Western Kentucky University’s College of Health and Human Services will host 50 Bowling Green High School students who are members of their school’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter.
Representatives from CHHS departments will provide these students with information about their programs and answer any questions the students may have. The students will have the opportunity to tour the School of Nursing, Dental Hygiene Clinic and Clinical Education Complex during their visit.
The programs to be represented on Monday include Social Work, Nutrition, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Physical Education (Teacher Education and Exercise Science), Recreation Administration, Public Health (Health Care Administration, Health Education, and Environmental Health), and Communication Disorders.
The event offers a great opportunity for the HOSA students to learn more about careers available in health and human services and the level of education it takes to become a practicing professional. The students will also experience several facilities where CHHS students can put the knowledge they receive in the classroom to practical use. This collaboration is an excellent way for CHHS to highlight our programs and recruit outstanding students. The HOSA students will also benefit greatly by gaining a better understanding of their field of interest and what it takes to compete for educational opportunities and careers.
WKU has one of the only collegiate chapters of HOSA, which is housed in the South Central Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC). This unique opportunity will allow the BGHS students to continue their participation in the organization.
The College of Health and Humans Services is working in collaboration with AHEC and the WKU HOSA chapter to host a HOSA Regional Competition on Dec. 7. Local high school chapters will be invited to participate. The main goal of the regional competition is to prepare the HOSA students to be successful at state, and possibly, national HOSA competitions.
