Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma received the Barbara V. Ferraro first place award for Outstanding Service Program this year at the sorority’s national convention.
Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority gives the award to the collegiate chapter with the most outstanding service program taking into consideration the chapter’s accumulated service hours, projects involving more than half of the membership, and participation in different service areas on campus and in the community.
In celebrating 55 years of service on Oct. 12, Gamma Sigma Sigma takes this time to recognize its chapters recently awarded for their efforts for the 2005-2007 biennium. The Beta Sigma Chapter at WKU is one of the sorority’s 60 collegiate chapters and colonies in the United States.
The local chapter at WKU received this award, named after the sorority’s first national president, for the second continuous biennium. During this time, members of the Beta Sigma Chapter volunteered weekly at the Salvation Army and the Boys & Girls Club as well as participated in projects for national service partners like the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and March of Dimes WalkAmerica.
Gamma Sigma Sigma is WKU’s oldest service organization for students with its existence dating back to 1967. At the sorority’s convention, the WKU chapter also received the Project I.M.P.A.C.T. Award for projects under the theme “fighting hunger.” The Beta Sigma chapter averaged 76.5 hours per semester per member during the biennium as recorded on the chapter’s semester reports.
