Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Political Engagement Project is continuing its year of “The Great Conversation” with several events about the global warming issue.
WKU’s Political Engagement Project has been joined by Greentoppers Students for Campus Sustainability, Campus Activities Board, African American Studies, Department of Political Science and the Cultural Enhancement Series for the Conversation on Global Warming.
The events are designed to foster responsible democratic participation, knowledge and understanding on issues of sustainability of the environment and natural resources, and emphasize the individual’s political role in making a difference in future policy decisions affecting global climate change. All events are free and open to the public.
The Conversation on Global Warming, which kicked off during Constitution Week in September, continues Wednesday (Oct. 17) with a showing of Al Gore’s documentary on climate change, “An Inconvenient Truth.” The film begins at 7 p.m. on the Downing University Center South Lawn.
Gore and the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work to disseminate information about man-made climate change.
The film’s showing is sponsored by the Greentoppers, Political Engagement Project, Department of Political Science and Campus Activities Board.
The global warming conversation continues next week with “Planet in Peril,” a four-hour CNN program that looks at four key issues: climate change, vanishing habitats, disappearing species and human population growth.
“Planet in Peril,” a collaboration of CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Animal Planet’s Jeff Corwin and CNN’s Sanjay Gupta, will be shown from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 23-24 at the Red Zone in Downing University Center.
Attendees will have an opportunity to sound off at a video petition station and sign “Stamp Out Global Warming” postcards. This event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Enhancement Series, Greentoppers, Political Engagement Project and Campus Activities Board.
On Monday, Oct. 29, African American Studies and Political Engagement Project will sponsor “The Stink of Environmental Racism.”
The Cultural Enhancement Series, co-sponsored by Campus Activities Board, will bring Jeff Corwin to campus at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Van Meter Auditorium. Corwin will speak on modern-day extinction and habitat exploitation of the 21st century.
WKU’s Conversation on Global Warming culminates in a Focus the Nation national Teach In on Jan. 31.
WKU is one of eight universities nationwide participating in the Political Engagement Project, which is part of the American Democracy Project. “The Great Conversation” series began with “Your Voice: Does It Matter?” and will continue with “Privacy Issues” and “The State of Health Care.”
