Green, Ky. - The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University is planning several events this month for students, parents, educators and community members.
Gifted services workshop: “Services for the Gifted High School Student: AP and More” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Knicely Conference Center at WKU’s South Campus. Dr. Felicia Dixon, co-editor of “The Handbook of Secondary Gifted Education,” will be the keynote speaker.
Advanced Placement is an appropriate service for high school students who are gifted and talented – but it is only one service. Kentucky regulations mandate multiple service options with no single service option standing alone. What do these other services look like? How can high schools incorporate multiple services so that students make continuous progress? Spend a day exploring real-life service options from real high schools.
The Berta Fund for Excellence in Education Series: Dr. George Betts, an internationally acclaimed speaker and consultant helping schools, districts, states and national organizations implement and refine programs for the gifted and talented, will visit WKU on Oct. 23-24.
Dr. Betts, professor in the School of Special Education at Northern Colorado University, will present a seminar on “Facilitating Lifelong Learning in the Home” from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 23 and will conduct a workshop on “The Autonomous Learner Model for the Gifted and Talented” from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Both events are free and open to the public and will be held at the Knicely Conference Center, WKU South Campus.
Fall Super Saturdays: The annual Fall Super Saturdays program for students in grades 1-7 begins Oct. 27.
Designed to provide opportunities for students to broaden their interests, 42 classes emphasize a hands-on, minds-on approach to learning. Classes range from “Spotlight on Science” to “Girl Power,” “Chess for Success” to “Math in Art,” and “Bridge Building and Construction Management” to “Map Mania.” Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17. Financial aid is available.
