College Of Health And Human Services Works To Identify Emerging Scholars In Area

October 25, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s College of Health and Human Services hosted high school guidance counselors from the Bowling Green area on Wednesday (Oct. 24).

Faculty and department heads from CHHS academic programs shared information and answered questions about careers in health and human services.  Resources that prepare area high school graduates for professional success include, but are not limited to, the following: dental hygiene, nursing, social work, physical education, communication disorders, dietetics, public health, healthcare administration and recreation.

“CHHS is committed to meeting the demand for the positive occupational outlook for careers in the health and human services area,” said Dr. Sylvia Gaiko, associate dean.  “Discussing strategies in guiding students to these careers and academic programs for professional success is a wonderful way to strengthen our partnership between CHHS and high schools in the Bowling Green area.”

Discussion topics included the importance of math and science courses in high school, as this is an important component of health and human services professions.

Counselors also toured the Clinical Education Complex, one of a number of resources that CHHS students routinely use during the course of their studies for the application of theory in a “real-world” practical experience.  Opportunities for student learning in the rural and international area were also highlighted to demonstrate the college’s commitment to student engagement in higher education.
