Efforts Support Recycle Of Denim Into Home Insulation
October 3, 2007
Bowling Green, Ky. - Instead of taking dirty laundry home for the weekend, one group of WKU students is asking their peers to make a switch and bring their dirty laundry back to school.
As part of Cotton’s Dirty Laundry Tour, WKU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is participating in Cotton. From Blue to Green, a denim drive being held at 11 college campuses across the country. The denim drive collects old denim that can be converted into natural fiber insulation. According to Cotton Incorporated, last year’s drive collected enough denim to help build more than 70 houses throughout the Gulf Coast region.
"We are so excited that WKU was chosen as a location for such an awesome project,” said Bekah Clark, WKU PRSSA president. “Not only are WKU students giving back to the community and doing something for the environment, but as public relations majors, we're also putting the skills we've learned in the classroom to use by promoting the denim drive and encouraging students to give.”
Cotton’s Dirty Laundry Tour, supported by CAB on Sept. 24, kicked off the denim drive at WKU with music, games and activities to increase students’ awareness about cotton and the process used to turn it into insulation.
According to WKU PRSSA, campus collections so far have reached 110 pieces of used denim, one-fifth of its goal of 500.
PRSSA students will continue to collect denim through the week of Monday, Oct. 15. Faculty, staff and students can drop off their used denim on the first floor of the Downing University Center on Mondays, both Oct. 8 and Oct. 15, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.
According to Cotton Incorporated, any kind of denim can be donated. “It can be any kind and color of denim, and it doesn’t matter how worn it may be,” said Clark. “It can all be turned into insulation.”
