Green, Ky. - The Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble, invited to Western Kentucky University in celebration of Kentucky Native American Heritage Month, will present “The Drum is the Thunder, the Flute is the Wind” on Nov. 15.
The performance is free and open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. at Van Meter Auditorium.
Adapted from the traditional dance to welcome the “Return of the Thunders,” the performance offers a rich variety of Native American aesthetics and traditions in an unforgettable evening of entertainment that includes hoop dancing, fancy dancing, traditional flute playing and storytelling.
The ensemble’s visit to WKU is sponsored by the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology, The Provost’s Initiatives for Excellence and Campus Activities Board.
Recent appearances by the Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble include the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, a follow-up performance at the NMAI in New York City, the World Culture Open at the Lincoln Center (sponsored in part by the United Nations), and a residency at the University of Arizona.
Future performances include a return to the Smithsonian in New York, followed by a dance at Symphony Space in Manhattan.
