Wilderness First Aid Course Scheduled For January

November 07, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - WKU’s Continuing Education office will offer a Wilderness First Aid Course on Jan. 6-7.

This program is designed for the person who might need to provide basic first aid in the event of an emergency. Families who go camping, scoutmasters, hunters and others who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle should consider this course.

Studies have shown that many recreational accidents are preventable, and that improper care of trauma can compound even the simplest of injuries. Very few first aid programs address the issues of providing emergency care in a rural, wilderness or extended care setting, making this course unique.

Rescue personnel who have extensive outdoor experience will teach the course.  Instructors were chosen not only for their expertise in emergency medicine and rescue, but also for their teaching skills. Classroom lectures and discussions are supplemented by practical work and problem-solving exercises with an emphasis on hands-on experience.

Participation in this course also counts as recertification for individuals who have taken the Wilderness First Responder course.

For information, call the Continuing Education office at (270) 745-1910 or visit the WKU wilderness first aid website at www.wku.edu/winter/WFA. The website includes a course registration form, medical release form and a course gear list.

Continuing Education is a unit of WKU’s Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO).
