WKU Student Featured In Study Abroad Guide

November 19, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University student from Starkville, Miss., is featured in a study abroad guide released by The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).

Allison Noffsinger, a senior public relations and Spanish major with minors in Latin American studies and international business, offers tips for a successful study abroad experience in “Adventures Abroad: the Student’s Guide to Studying Overseas.”

“I took a gap year before going to college, and all I can say is Do it! Do it! Do it!,” Noffsinger says in the book. “There’s no finish line in life; why is everyone in such a hurry?”

Following high school, Noffsinger spent a year in Arequipa, Peru, as a Rotary youth exchange student. She has also studied in Seville, Spain and has backpacked through more than 20 countries. She recently received the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship and will be moving to Cairo, Egypt, to study for a year following graduation.

“Immersing oneself in another culture and language is the best way we can learn about ourselves,” Noffsinger said. “Words cannot express how thankful I am for the opportunity Rotary gave me four years ago. Every year they allow thousands of students to crisscross cities around the globe with the ultimate goal of creating mutual understanding among individuals. It creates a special understanding among young people who develop a yearning to bring the world together while striving to help and respect others—no matter their beliefs or national origins.”

More than 240 WKU students participated in study abroad programs in 2006-07, visiting Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, the Pacific, North American and the Middle East. Study abroad programs also brought students from eight countries to WKU.
